On September 15, a fintech delegation from Mauritius arrived in Prague as part of an economic diplomacy project PROPED. Ondřej Mikulčík attended the meeting on behalf of the Czech WealthTech Association Ondřej Mikulčík.
The goal was to connect Mauritian companies and institutions with the Czech fintech ecosystem and explore opportunities for concrete collaboration. Discussions focused primarily on digital payments, AI, digital identity, cybersecurity, lending, RegTech, and data analytics.
Mauritius is a small domestic market, but it has long positioned itself as an international financial center and a platform for cross-border financial services. For Czech companies, it may therefore be interesting not only in its own right but also as a potential location for establishing partnerships before entering other African markets.
The delegation members were looking for partners in areas where Czech fintechs have strong know-how. These include, for example, KYC and digital identity, AI scoring, payment infrastructure, accounting automation, cybersecurity, and data processing.
A direct expansion of a Czech company into a new region may not be the most interesting model. A more realistic approach could be collaborating with a local partner who is already familiar with local regulations, customers, and the market.
Of course, Mauritius is not an automatic ticket to all of Africa. However, if a Czech company finds a specific customer, distributor, or technology partner, it can be a good place for an initial pilot project.
For the Czech WealthTech Association, the meeting was interesting precisely because of this connection. Czech companies can offer technology and experience from the European market, while Mauritian companies bring local contacts and regional knowledge.
